Vol.112 三つ子の魂百まで(1)
三つ子の魂百まで。これは英語にもきっとありそうですよね。Grantに聞いてみまし
た。やはり、複数あるそうです。例えば、
You are what you are.
何となく分かりますが、この背景は、
The idea that once you are something, you cannot change, or it's very difficult to change.
Because you pick up the habits, or that thing becomes your nature.
だそうです。日本語の『三つ子の～』とほぼ同じですよね。もう少し気の利いた表現
としては、
A leopard never changes its spots.
A leopard can't change its spots.
があり、これらはよく使われるそうです。『ヒョウはヒョウ柄を変えることはでき
ない』という表現は、上手い例えだと感心します。
多くの表現を教えてもらったので、続きは次号でお届けします。
Vol.113 三つ子の魂百まで(2)
昨日の『三つ子の魂～』の英語表現の続きです。
Once a bishop, always a bishop.
(Here 'bishop' can be changed to any job or role and the meaning is understood.)
“bishop” は『司教、司祭』という意味で、”bishop” を他の仕事や役割に変え
ても通用するようです。
これは、今はあまり一般には使われなくなったそうですが、
'Black will take no other hue.
“hue” は『色』です。他にも、
As the twig is bent, so grows the tree.
これは、
A person (or animal etc) is what they are brought up to be.
という意味ですが、『枝は曲がったように木に成長する』という意味からも、あまり
良いことには使われなさそうですね。
Vol.114 長い目で見れば
英文を書いていて、”in the long run” は確か『長い目でみれば』だったなと
思ったのですが、自信がなかったのでGrantに聞いてみました。
"In the long run" means "over a long period".
It really has the same meaning as "in the end".
私の記憶は間違っていなかったようです。そして、Grantは具体的な用例を紹介して
くれました。
School leavers face a dilemma and may be told by teachers etc, that - "getting a job may be good financially in the short term, but going to university will be better in the long run."
この用例でも、対義語として “in the short term” が出てきましたが、
The opposite "in the short run" is not really used.
"In the short term" is used and has the same meaning
だそうです。
”in the long run” と “in the short term” を対比して覚えておくと上の用例
のように使えて便利だと思います。
Vol.115 投げ飛ばす
先週の日曜日に大相撲九州場所が朝青龍の全勝優勝で終わりましたね。今日は、
相撲で使いそうな単語からご紹介します。
“Throw one’s weight around”
相撲で出てくると『投げ飛ばす』という意味ですが、通常の文章で使われると、
Use your weight (power, influence, etc) too much.
To be overly forceful or overbearing.
という意味になります。つまり、『権力を振りかざす、威張り散らす』という意味
です。
No one likes a boss who throws his or her weight around.
最後は、Grantの示唆に富んだアドバイスです。
I think in life, as in Sumo, it's important to use your “weight” carefully so that you don't lose your balance.
A Sumo wrestler who throws his weight around will soon be beaten by a smarter opponent.
なるほど。私も気を付けたいところですが、残念ながらそれなりに体重はあっても、
幸か不幸か私には振りかざすパワーはありません。パワーをお持ちの方はくれぐれも
お気をつけ下さい。
Vol.116 資格
このようなご質問を読者の方から頂きました。
最近、友人が社会保険労務士の資格を取得したのですが、この社会保険労務士の
英訳は何でしょうか？他にマンション管理士や通関士などもありますよね。国に
よって制度が異なるので英語圏では無い資格もあるでしょうが、一応外国人に説明
するのにどういうのか参考までに教えてください。

This qualification is particular to Japan, so the titles are invented.
この資格は、日本特有の資格のようです。
マンション管理士

The word 'mansion' has a very different meaning in English to Japanese.
In English it means a very large, modern style home.
まず、資格名としては前に “Qualified” “Certified” “Registered” 等を
つけた方が確実だと思います。
そして、『マンション』の意味が日本語と英語で異なるのは要注意です。なぜ、
日本語のマンションの意味が英語の本来の意味からずれてしまったのかは分かりま
せんが、英語ではいわゆる『豪邸』を “mansion” と言い、日本語でいうところの
『マンション』を意味するのは “condominium” です。
